Hardware wallet reviews cover security features. Nobody covers whether the device still works after four years in a drawer, which is the actual use case.

What we have seen fail

A battery that would not hold charge after about three years of infrequent use. The device worked when plugged in and the wireless function did not.

A worn connector, from a device used more regularly. Intermittent connection, which during a transfer is genuinely unnerving.

A screen with reduced contrast, making address verification harder over time, which matters because verification is the whole point of the screen.

None of these lost funds. The recovery phrase restores to a new device, which is precisely why standard recovery matters more than any other property.

The implications

Battery-powered devices have a component with a finite life, used in a pattern that is bad for batteries: long periods idle at whatever charge level they were left at.

For a device touched quarterly, a model without a battery has one fewer failure mode.

Connectors wear. A device used weekly will wear faster than one used quarterly, which is another argument for the tiered arrangement where the cold device is rarely touched.

Firmware support ends. Manufacturers eventually stop supporting older models. A device that cannot be updated is one running software with known issues.

This is the one that concerns us most for a decade-long horizon, and it is why standard recovery is non-negotiable.

What this means for buying

Standard recovery phrase is essential. It means the device is replaceable and its failure is an inconvenience rather than a loss.

A second backup location for the phrase matters more than a second device, because the phrase restores anywhere.

Check the manufacturer’s support history for older models before buying. Some have long records; some do not.

What we do

Test the device annually as part of the restore test. Power it on, confirm it works, confirm the address matches the record.

That annual check catches a failing device at a moment of your choosing rather than at a moment of need.

And keep the phrase backup independent of the device, in two locations, because the device is the replaceable part and the phrase is not.

The working balance

The tier at the exchange used for the withdrawal test has no hardware to fail, which is a genuine advantage for the portion you actually move.

The cold device holds what it holds precisely because it is not touched, and the properties that matter there are the ones nobody reviews: does it still power on in four years, and can it be replaced if it does not.
