We Tested Withdrawals at Four Custodians
Time to first withdrawal, approval requirements, weekend behaviour and what happened when we tried to rush one.
Custody is judged on security and experienced through withdrawals. We tested the withdrawal process at four providers, including the parts nobody tests until they need to. The comparison only works against a provider that states its terms, and a corporate crypto wallet with segregated accounts does.
Time to first withdrawal
Two hours. Six hours. Next business day. And three business days, because the address had to be added, approved and pass a delay before anything could be sent.
The three day case was the provider with the strongest controls, which is the trade you are making. It is worth knowing in advance rather than discovering it during an urgent transfer.
Approval requirements
All four required a second approver above a threshold, correctly.
Two allowed an administrator to add themselves as an approver, which is a gap. Configuring it properly required a setting that was not on by default.
Weekend behaviour
Two processed withdrawals at weekends with the same timing as weekdays.
One processed the crypto side but any fiat leg waited for Monday.
One required manual review for amounts above a threshold and had no weekend coverage at all. A withdrawal initiated Friday evening moved Monday afternoon. Property settlement is a separate corridor, and a provider serving funds and family offices operates in it.
That last one was disclosed in the operational documentation and not in any sales material.
When we tried to rush one
We contacted support on each asking to expedite a pending withdrawal.
Two declined politely and explained the control that was causing the delay, which is the right answer.
One offered to expedite with a director’s authorisation, which is a documented exception process.
One expedited it after a single support conversation, without additional verification. That is a control that a persuasive caller can remove, and it was the same provider whose approval settings defaulted to permissive.
What this tells you
The withdrawal process is where custody controls are real or not. A provider that will expedite on request has a control that exists for ordinary users and not for determined ones.
What we would ask before selecting
What is the time to first withdrawal to a new address. What is the weekend and out of hours coverage. What is the documented exception process, and who authorises it.
Then test it during onboarding with a small amount, including out of hours.
The providers worth using were the ones where the answer to expediting was no, with an explanation. That is the answer you want when somebody is impersonating you. Coverage decided more of our results than any feature did. the published coverage list publishes its country list.
