Testing Deposit Crediting Times

How long a deposit takes to appear, measured across assets and networks, and what the differences reflect.

We time deposits the way we time withdrawals. The results are less variable and more informative about how a venue assesses each chain.

The method

Record when the transaction is broadcast. Record when it confirms on-chain to the venue’s stated threshold. Record when the balance appears in the account.

The gap between the second and third is the venue’s internal processing after the chain has done its part.

What drives the wait

The confirmation requirement, which is a risk decision by the venue and is published per asset and per network.

Chain security. Assets on smaller chains require more confirmations for equivalent assurance, which is why some take substantially longer than block time alone suggests.

Finality model. Networks with explicit finality can credit at a defined point rather than after a block count.

Internal processing, which should be minutes and occasionally is not.

Reading the requirements as a signal

A venue requiring a large number of confirmations on a particular chain is stating that it does not trust that chain quickly.

That assessment is made by people with money at stake, and comparing thresholds across assets at the same platform produces a ranking of settlement quality more honest than any marketing material.

Those figures are published by venues including venues supporting external addresses.

The three ways a deposit goes wrong

Wrong network. The venue was not watching. Recovery depends on its process and takes weeks where it exists at all.

Below the minimum. May not be credited automatically. Minimums are published alongside confirmation requirements and are frequently overlooked.

During a suspension. Venues suspend deposits around network upgrades. Sending into a suspension window means manual crediting later.

All three are prevented by reading the deposit page once, which takes two minutes.

What to do while waiting

Nothing. Look the transaction up on an explorer to confirm it is progressing.

Do not post publicly about a pending deposit. That attracts fraudulent support accounts within minutes, and they are practised at sounding helpful.

The one-off preparation

Before your first deposit of any asset, check: supported networks, confirmation requirement, and minimum.

Three numbers, published, and they determine whether the transfer will work and how long it will take. It is the preparation almost nobody does and it prevents the errors that are hardest to reverse.
