Hardware Wallet Screens Compared

The display is the security feature. We compared readability across devices and the differences change behaviour.

A hardware wallet’s screen is the only display an attacker cannot alter. Everything the device protects depends on you actually reading it.

Why it matters more than key storage

Every reputable device stores keys securely. They do not meaningfully differ there.

Where they differ is whether verifying a destination address on the device is a two-second glance or a squinting exercise across three screens of scrolling.

That difference determines whether people verify at all, and skipping verification removes the main protection the device provides.

What we assessed

Physical size and resolution. Whether a full address is readable without scrolling.

Character rendering. Whether similar characters are distinguishable. Some fonts make certain pairs genuinely ambiguous, which matters for an address you are checking character by character.

Scrolling behaviour. Devices that show an address across several screens require you to hold it in memory, which people do badly.

Contract interaction display. Whether a contract call shows a decoded operation or a hash. Approving a hash means trusting the computer that built it, which defeats the purpose of the device.

What we found

Larger screens changed our own behaviour measurably. On devices where the full address fits, we verified every time. On small ones we caught ourselves checking only the ends, which is exactly the shortcut that address substitution attacks exploit.

That is not a statement about the security of the hardware. It is a statement about the security of the human, and the human is the part that fails.

Blind signing

Where a device cannot decode a transaction, some fall back to displaying a hash and asking for approval.

A device that supports full display for the chains and operations you actually use is meaningfully safer than one that does not, and this varies substantially. Checking before buying is worth the five minutes.

The verification habit that matters

Check characters from the middle of the address, not only the ends. Attacks generate addresses matching the first and last characters specifically because that is what people check.

A screen that makes the middle readable is a screen that supports the habit.

The buying rules, which have not changed

From the manufacturer. Never a marketplace. A genuine device never arrives with a recovery phrase.

Set it up, restore-test before funding, and move the long-term portion across from wherever you bought, which for us is the exchange used for the withdrawal test, sending a small test amount first.
