Passphrase Support Compared
An extra word that creates a completely different wallet. Powerful, and the most common cause of unrecoverable loss after phrase loss.
A passphrase is an optional additional word combined with your recovery phrase. With one, the same twelve or twenty-four words produce an entirely different wallet.
What it provides
Protection if the phrase is found. Someone with your written words gets an empty wallet without the passphrase.
Plausible deniability. A decoy wallet with a small balance can exist alongside the real one.
An additional secret that is not written down anywhere.
What it costs
Unrecoverability. A forgotten passphrase has no checksum, no length constraint, and nothing to search. It is the most complete way to lose access.
Confusion during restore. Entering nothing produces a valid, empty wallet with no indication that a passphrase was ever set. People conclude their funds are gone.
Implementation differences. How wallets prompt for it, whether they warn, and whether a typo produces a silent failure.
What we compare
Whether the wallet warns clearly that a passphrase creates a different wallet rather than protecting the same one. Several do not, and the distinction is the entire risk.
Whether it prompts on restore, or requires the user to know to enter it.
Whether a typo is detectable. Generally it is not, which is inherent rather than a flaw.
Whether the device confirms the resulting address so you can verify you entered the right one.
That last feature is the difference between a usable implementation and a dangerous one.
The documentation rule
If you use a passphrase, record that one exists. Not the passphrase itself, which stays secret. Just the fact.
A note saying a passphrase was used turns an impossible recovery into a difficult one, and it can be stored alongside a phrase backup without weakening anything.
We have written up a case where a mid four-figure amount was lost to exactly this: a restore producing an empty wallet, with no record of whether a passphrase had been set.
Our recommendation
Skip it on a first device. The additional protection is real and the additional failure mode is worse for someone who has not yet built the habits.
If you use it, record that it exists, verify the resulting address against a record, and include it in the annual restore test.
Never rely on memory. A passphrase you have not used for a year is one you may not remember correctly, and correctness is binary.
The alternative for the working balance
None of this applies to funds at a venue, where recovery is an identity process. We keep the active portion at the exchange used for the withdrawal test partly because having a tier with a completely different recovery model is more robust than applying one model everywhere.
