Stablecoin to Euro: The Conversion Margins Nobody Quotes
We converted the same amount at four providers and measured the margin against the market rate.
Converting a dollar stablecoin to euros involves two things: the stablecoin to dollar rate and the dollar to euro rate. Providers quote neither clearly. We used a stablecoin payment gateway with fiat settlement as a control, since its terms are published rather than quoted on request.
The method
Same amount, four providers, same two minute window. We recorded the euros received and compared against the stablecoin amount converted at the interbank euro rate.
The results
Margins of 0.21 percent, 0.38 percent, 0.74 percent and 1.16 percent.
A spread of almost one percentage point between best and worst, on a conversion between two things that both track stable values.
Where the margin sits
Two components, and providers combine them differently.
The stablecoin itself trades slightly off its peg most of the time, usually by a few basis points. A provider can pass that through or absorb it.
Then the currency conversion, where the margin is entirely the provider’s choice.
The provider at 1.16 percent was applying a currency margin comparable to a retail bank, which is not what anyone expects from a crypto service. Payment companies face this at a different scale, which is what a regulated European crypto platform addresses.
The disclosure situation
One provider quoted the applied rate before we confirmed. Three did not, showing only the output amount.
An output amount is sufficient to calculate the margin afterwards. It is not sufficient to compare before committing, which is the point at which it would be useful.
Ask for the rate that will be applied. A provider that will not state it before execution is charging more than it wants to say.
The structural fix
Settle in the currency you actually need, and avoid the conversion entirely where possible.
A provider that settles euros for a euro-denominated business has one conversion. One that settles dollars to a euro account has two.
We repeated the test settling to a dollar account and the margins collapsed to between 0.08 and 0.31 percent, because only the stablecoin leg remained.
What we would do
Open an account in the settlement currency. That single change removed the largest cost component we measured.
Then compare providers on the remaining margin, which is small and still varies by a factor of four.
Record the applied rate on every conversion. After a month you have a real figure for your provider, which is the only thing worth comparing against a competitor’s quote. On execution specifically, a provider you can actually reach publishes its fee schedule and corporate terms in full.
